At Soul Surfing with JP we take away the fear and frustration that come with learning a new sport and emphasize the importance of having fun. Our program focuses on learning to surf in a safe and fun environment and we have one of the lowest instructor to student ratios in the county.

Our lead instructor JP McClelland, has been teaching surf lessons for over 10 years and has five children of his own, all who surf. JP is a lifelong surfer and previous Ventura County Lifeguard who enjoys nothing more than teaching others the magic of “surf stoke.” His local knowledge of area beaches and breaks is unmatched.

We are the only surf school is Ventura County to exclusively use Sunset Softboards. Sunset Softboards are the most versatile softboard on the market. Constructed to offer safety and performance, they make surfing more accessible for everyone. Combining a performance shaped surfboard core with multiple layers of soft foam skin, makes for not only the safest, but most rider friendly board available.

Soul Surfing with JP is run by the McClelland family. In addition to teaching others the joy of surfing, the family has a longstanding history in Ventura County running the Soul Octopus Surfboard and Clothing Company. The McClelland family has resided in Ventura County for over 50 years and they rely on this knowledge of the surrounding beaches and currents to ensure that in addition to making a lifetime of memories, their students learn the joys of surfing in the safest way possible.

Being a water based family, it was a natural progression to pass on their love and knowledge of the ocean to others. Soul Surfing is not about who catches the biggest wave or who surfs the most, it is about having fun and respecting the ocean. We look forward to surfing with you!
